The central government, aiming at the comprehensive promotion and development of scientific beekeeping in the country to achieve the goal of “gentle revolution”, has approved/sanctioned 45 projects for the aid of ₹88.87 crore for funding within the framework of the national beekeeping and honey mission (NBHM).
The Economic Study for 2021-2022 stated that considering the importance of beekeeping under the Integrated Farming System (IFS) in the country, the government approved the allocation of ₹500 crore for NBHM for three years from 2020-21 to 2022-23. The mission was announced under the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat program.
The survey said, “NBHM aims at the overall promotion and development of scientific beekeeping in the country to achieve the goal of ‘Sweet Revolution’ which is being implemented through the National Bee Board (NBB).” A total of 45 projects for the ₹88.87 crore assistance were approved/sanctioned for funding under NBHM as of December 17, he said.
Exports up 110%
India’s honey exports increased by around 110% between 2013-14 and 2019-20.
The diverse agro-climatic conditions of the country offer great potential and opportunities for beekeeping/honey production and honey export.
Beekeeping is an agricultural activity undertaken by farmers/landless laborers in rural areas under IFS.
