Broncs ends the regular season undefeated | Sports


With their 67-16 victory over the Highland Prep Honey Badgers on Oct. 29, the Parker Broncs football team ended their regular season undefeated and placed the state’s No.1 in Conference 2A. They finished 4-0 against their 2A rivals Agua Fria, 8-0 against 2A teams and 9-0 in aggregate. They are the 2A Agua Fria regular season champions.

Now comes the Arizona Interschool Association 2A State Tournament. As Broncs coach Jeston Lotts told his players after the Highland Prep game, “Do or die from here on out.”

The No.1 Broncs will face No.16 seed the Red Mesa Redskins in a first-round playoff scheduled for Friday, November 5 at Parker High School. Red Mesa is in Region 2A of San Juan. The school is located in Red Mesa, an unincorporated community on the Navajo Nation reservation in Apache County. They are only a few miles south of the border with Utah.

Red Mesa was 2-0 against rivals 2A San Juan, 3-2 against teams 2A and 4-2 overall.

The record for the Redskins this season was that they put a lot of points on the board or their opponents put a lot of points on the board. Their only truly competitive game came on Oct. 13, when they beat Whitehorse, Utah, 14-8. Their wins include a 60-0 win over Hopi and a 60-6 win over Pinon. Their losses include a 49-8 loss to St. Johns and a 56-8 loss to Alchesay.

The playoff game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 5 at Joe Bush Stadium. As the stadium sits on land owned by Colorado River Indian tribes, coronavirus mitigation rules will be in place. These include face mask and social distancing requirements.

The winner of the Parker-Red Mesa match will face the winner of the match between No.8 Willcox and No.9 Holbrook, which will also be played on November 5. The play-off of the second round will be played at home. of the highest seed, which means Parker could have two playoff games this season.

In the game against Highland Prep, things started badly for the Honey Badgers as Anthony Taylor scored a touchdown for the Broncs just 26 seconds into the game. They got a second touchdown less than a minute later. The Broncs recovered one of their own kickoffs and Tyson Ross intercepted a pass that led to a Broncs touchdown. The Broncs scored three more touchdowns, including one on a punt return. They got a two-point conversion each time and the Broncs took a 48-0 lead.

It was only the first trimester. At the start of the second quarter, the officials decided to let the clock run except for the timeouts.

The Broncs had two more touchdowns in the second quarter, but the two-run attempt on one and a rare one-run kick attempt after the touchdown on the other failed. At halftime the score was Parker 60, Highland Prep 0.

In the third quarter, Highland Prep’s offense showed life as they sank deep into the Broncs’ territory. However, with 6:20 left in the quarter, Ruben Standiford intercepted a pass from Honey Badger. This led to Alberto Larraga catching a pass and running 40 yards for a touchdown. Bryan Bojorquez scored the extra point and Parker led after three quarters, 67-0.

Highland Prep finally made it into the table in the fourth quarter, as Brandon Nevers and Kohen Hill had touchdown passes. They got two point conversions on both scores. With Nevers scoring, it looked like they had failed, but officials ruled on passing interference from the Broncs. It gave the Honey Badgers a second chance, and they played the game on that one.

In addition to the Broncs, another 2A Agua Fria team is in the state playoffs. Camp Verde, ranked No.6, will face the No.11 team, St. Johns, at Camp Verde.

The 2A State Championship game will be played the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27, at 2 p.m. at Campo Verde High School in Mesa.
