‘Goa’s Multi-Floral Tree Plants Give Honey a Unique Taste’ | Goa News

Panaji: Goa is known for its multi-floral tree vegetation which produces rare nectar. This is assimilated by the bees, resulting in the production of honey with a unique taste, said famous beekeeper P Shaliyo.
He was interacting with 21 participants from various parts of the state who participated in his beekeeping training program held recently at the Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute in Quepem.
While sharing his knowledge and experience on the subject, Shaliyo introduced the participants to the basics of bee biology and the management of the colony of bees of the Apis Cerana Indica race.
Shaliyo gave participants a hands-on demonstration in the institute’s apiary, which contains live hive colonies. Some of the participants also handled the combs with live bees, which changed their view of bee behavior.
“The role of bees in boosting agricultural and horticultural production cannot be underestimated. Due to the research carried out in recent years and the resulting awareness, a significant number of people across Goa have attended beekeeping training programs, which take place almost twice a month at the institute,” said the director of the institute, Father Michael D’Costa.
D’Costa further informed attendees of the various government programs available that offer a subsidy for the purchase of hive colonies. He also explained the procedure for making the request.
Detailed information on beekeeping training and post-training support can be obtained from Don Bosco’s VTI office on 7498689248. Interested participants can also email [email protected] for necessary details.
