News: NATO Honey Harvest 2021, 20-Dec-2021

Since April 2020, NATO headquarters in Brussels has housed three beehives. In 2020, they produced 25 kg of natural honey. Even though 2021 was a difficult year for honey production in Belgium, it was surprisingly productive for NATO bees. About 60 kilos of high-quality honey were harvested from the NATO headquarters site, rated “Best Production Site” by the beekeeper Made in Abeilles.

Most of the production, 350 jars, was sold to the NATO Charity Bazaar in November. The proceeds from the sale of honey have been added to the global funds raised at the Bazaar this year, which will benefit the 34 Belgian and international projects approved for funding in 2021.

In keeping with last year’s tradition, the Secretary General presented the ambassadors to the North Atlantic Council with a NATO-made honey pot each on December 15, 2021. Aramark, the catering service provider of the NATO, also purchased jars to use honey as an ingredient for meals in the NATO cafeteria. .

The well-being of bees is closely linked to the sustainability and protection of our natural habitats and ecosystems. In August, a honey harvesting workshop was organized at NATO Headquarters. More workshops and information sessions will follow to enable people to learn more about bees and their contribution to a sustainable future.
