He said he had 48.1 million hectares suitable for honey production and that nearly 90 percent of beekeeping activities were carried out through traditional practices, including making beehives using bark. trees, thus contributing to the small production of honey.

Prof Silayo added that setting up the project will help improve the making of beehives, honey harvesting and the company will help them gain access to honey markets.

For his part, Malinyi District Commissioner Mathayo Massele, in his project launch speech, called on young people to engage in a better and modern beekeeping business as they will be assured of markets, both inside and outside the country.

He said many people have gotten rich through beekeeping and in that recognition they have enrolled 14-24 year olds.

Morogoro region administrative secretary Dr Rozalia rwegasira called on young people to stop fleeing to cities to ride motorcycles (bodaboda) and instead they should stay in villages and engage in profitable activities of which there were many.

Earlier, submitting his report on the implementation of the project, Acla Honey Company representative Giovanni Nguvu said that the company made up of graduates from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SAUA) owns farms in seven regions with 7,000 beehives producing 25,000 tonnes of honey. per year, most of which is exported.

He said the company had received sponsorship to implement the project which will involve Ulanga and Malinyi districts in Morogoro region and reach more than 1,500 young people between the ages of 14 and 24.
